The vision of Grace Place came to Carla Burton as she prayed for the needs of single women and their children. Carla shared this vision, and in December of 1992, Grace Place opened a shelter and group home for those in need. The shelter, which was located on the corner of Fifth and Franklin St. in Winona, was a home for young women and their children. The shelter remained open at this location until 2004.
In 2004, Grace Place made the decision to expand its services to better help the women and children it served. It wanted stay involved as long as possible in the lives of these families. To make a longer-lasting commitment to its clients, Grace Place decided it was necessary to sell the shelter and open Grace Place ministries and Grace Place Store on Second St. in Winona, Minnesota.
From this new location, Grace Place has continually offered a variety of mentoring services and family programs to women, children, and families of Winona area. To learn more about our history, or how you can help, contact us today.
Grace Place wants to return to where it started; providing shelters to the women and children of Winona and Southeast Minnesota. According to data from the National Center for Health and Statistics, more than 50% of children in Minnesota whose parents are 20-25 are living in a single parent home. Most of these families are below the poverty line and in substandard housing. These families need help, and they need guidance and support in developing healthy life skills.
Grace Place wants to provide faith - based shelters and resource centers that provide the best educational opportunities for families. These shelters would focus on teaching practical living skills, social graces, care for the environment, and faith formation. These shelters would provide the long term support and guidance needed for women and their children to grow physically, mentally, and spiritually.
